50,000 write NECO exam

More than 50,000 candidates are participating in the ongoing 2010/2011 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination in 1,000 centres in Lagos State, an official of the National Examination Council said.

The Lagos Zonal Coordinator of NECO, Mr Lasisi Abimbola, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Lagos that about 1,500 personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps would provide security at the centres.

Abimbola said adequate logistics had been put in place for the successful conduct of the examination.

He directed candidates to come to the examination centres with their examination slips and photo cards
“We have zero tolerance for any form of examination malpractice. NECO will not hesitate to come down heavily on any candidate who attempts to achieve success through the backdoor.

“We must start getting it right by ensuring that we get ourselves adequately prepared as students and look forward to reaping the fruits of a job well done,” he said.

He appealed to parents to encourage their children and wards to be self dependent, dedicated, disciplined and hardworking.

The NECO official also urged parents to enlighten their children on the dangers of examination malpractice.
He urged collective efforts in the elimination of examination fraud in the general interest of the society.

NAN reports that the examination began on June I and would end on July 13 nationwide.
